The Philosophy of Care in Action

“Nobody cares how much you know, until they know how much you care.” ~ Theodore Roosevelt Honoring and valuing our elders is indigenous in our Filipino culture. In the past older people were highly respected because they were seen to be valuable in passing on survival-based wisdom to the next generation. However, today’s society has lost a huge part of this sentiment. The youth oriented culture in our modern society has diminished and desensitized this core value of caring for the elderly. To address this challenge and in line with SISC’s 5Cs the College of Nursing has embarked on its Outreach Program to address the health needs of senior citizens in our adopted community Barangay CAA-4 Las Piñas. In August, initial case-finding visit in the community was conducted by the BSN II students guided by Ms. Mabel Pascual & Ms Grace Fe Tomas. Last September 24, 2014 the entire College of Nursing faculty and students in full-force spearheaded the Senior Citizens Wellness Program. It was a fun-filled morning that started with a zumba session and ended with BINGO games. In between the activities blood pressure taking and blood sugar checks were done. For October, in line with our Southville for Others (SFO) Initiative a half day Medical Mission with the Rotary Club is planned where ophthalmologists and optometrists will address vision problems of our elderly and will provide free eyeglasses as needed. These are just some of the several programs lined up for the academic year. Our hope is to help our indigent elderly regain their self esteem, give them back their value and sense of purpose in their community.
