Southville Matheletes Win Against China, Thailand



Gwyneth Margaux Tangog of Grade 8 - Integrity and Ervin Joshua Bautista of Grade 5 - Righteousness each won a medal as members of the Philippine team to the 13th International Mathematics Contest (IMC) held in Singapore last August 4 - 7, 2017. Gwyneth won a gold medal while Ervin bagged a silver medal.

They were instrumental in powering the Philippines to a first place finish with a haul of 245 medals consisting of 33 golds, 66 silvers, and 146 bronzes. Coming in second was China with 174 medals (30 golds, 45 silvers and 99 bronzes) then Thailand with 108 medals (18 golds, 35 silvers and 55 bronzes). They were followed by Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, Hong Kong, Iran, South Korea, Australia and India.

The IMC is an international competition for elementary and high school students participated in by around 300 students per level. Participants have to answer within 90 minutes multiple choice, fill in the blanks, and problem solving questions to gauge their mathematical abilities vis-a-vis their foreign counterparts.
