Southville Produces More Competitive RN’s

BS Nursing graduates of Southville International School and Colleges have proven once again the quality of education the institution is giving them.
Last academic year, SISC got an 88% passing rate in the Nursing Licensure Examination. This year, Southville’s class of BSN 2008 obtained a passing rate of 92%.

The College of Nursing of SISC offers a 4-year undergraduate program that leads to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. The baccalaureate program is approved and recognized by the National Commission on Higher Education of the Philippines. The undergraduate curriculum combines professional education in Nursing with a strong foundation in liberal arts.

The Dean of the College of Nursing, Mrs. Carmelita A. Villegas, said that this Academic Year, the college has adopted what she termed a curriculum that can better instill the core competencies of nursing profession.

“Throughout the academic program, students’ values and attitudes are also developed aside from their skills,” she said. The college has a mentoring program where in there is a faculty member assigned to assist a student in his or her studies and duties. “The students are followed up closely by the professors assigned to them… and I am very happy to say that we have dedicated and committed professors and clinical instructors who give their heart to the college to ensure that learning is being met.”

Mr. Gilbert Domingo, a Filipino-American National who was born and raised in the US and a second courser shared his insights on studying at Southville. “I chose Southville because of the personal contact it provides the students. Prior to Southville, I enrolled in a college somewhere in Parañaque. After my first sem, my wife and I decided to transfer because we realized that we will finish the course without learning anything.” Mr. Domingo also tried another university but again, the treatment given to students, according to him, is impersonal. “When I enrolled at Southville, I was accommodated very well. I feel at home here.” He shared that he can easily talk to his professors and discuss with them the lessons they had.

Dean Villegas said that the passing grade for the nursing students in their curriculum subjects is 81% not 75% as the practice in other schools; this is to develop a tradition of excellence among its students. About 90% of Class 2007 is now employed. One of them is Mr. Paul Comia, now a registered Nurse working at the Telemetry Unit of Asian Hospital and Medical Center.

Although there are reports about the decline of the demand of Filipino Nurses abroad, there are still countries, which are open to employment of foreign nurses like Canada, Japan, Finland and the Middle East.

There are around 27, 765 out of 64, 456 who passed the recently concluded Nursing Licensure Exam which is around 43.07% -the national passing rate.
