Clinical Exposure in Long-Term Care: A Transformative Experience

SISC BSN students Reflect on a Meaningful Clinical Placement Experience at Bahay Kanlunga, Muntinlupa City

During a recent clinical immersion at Bahay Kanlungan, our nursing students experienced more than just hands-on Clinical Exposure in Long-Term Care: A Transformative Experiencetraining—they discovered the deeper meaning of compassionate care.

Welcomed warmly by the staff, the students quickly immersed themselves in the daily routines of the facility’s 19 residents, most of whom were elderly, with one special child reminding them that care must always be personalized and inclusive.

From art therapy sessions to assisting with personal care, each day offered opportunities to connect, learn, and grow. A highlight was a touching celebration hosted by a long-time benefactor who shared her birthday—and a heartfelt message about generosity—with everyone. “My money isn’t going to the grave with me,” she said. “I’d rather share it with people who need it most.”

Moments like these brought smiles, stories, and a deep sense of purpose. By the final day, students crafted keepsakes with the residents—small reminders of love, presence, and connection.

This experience went far beyond fulfilling a requirement. It reminded our students that while nursing involves skill, at its heart, it’s about empathy, respect, and genuine human connection.

As Alexandra Centeno, a graduating BSN student reflected, “The residents may have been the ones we cared for, but they cared for us too—inspiring us to become not just better nurses, but better people.”
