From Caring Hands to the Skies: A Flight Fueled by Purpose

From Caring Hands to the Skies: A Flight Fueled by Purpose

Mr. Marc Bryan Chan, BSN Class of 2011, walked across the graduation stage not only with a nursing degree but also with a soaring dream — to become a pilot.

As a student, Marc was known for his quiet determination. He approached every clinical duty with dedication and tackled academic challenges with responsibility. Though his eyes were set on the skies, his heart was fully present in his nursing journey.

Looking back, Marc now proudly shares how his nursing foundation played a vital role in shaping the pilot he is today.

“It taught me the importance of discipline, leadership, and a deep sense of responsibility,” he says. “The way we were trained to think — intentionally and deliberately through the nursing process (ADPIE) — became second nature to me. I use that same structured thinking in aviation to make sound and safe decisions every time I fly.”

He adds that the intense moments of patient care trained him to remain calm under pressure — a skill that serves him well thousands of feet above the ground.

“Nursing taught me how to lead with clarity, especially in critical situations. That mindset continues to guide me in every cockpit I enter.”

But beyond skill and knowledge, it was faith that anchored Marc through every phase of his journey. He fondly remembers how reciting the Psalm 23 Southville Invocation before class and clinical duty became a source of strength.

“Through it all, I always pray and take to heart our Southville Invocation. It lifted me in moments of discouragement and gave me peace in uncertainty.”

With nursing as his foundation and faith as his compass, Marc soars not just as a pilot, but as a true servant-leader — in the air and in life.
