Southville International School and Colleges (SISC) proudly celebrates a historic milestone as alumna Gwyn Tangog graduates from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), becoming the first Southville student to be admitted to and earn a degree from one of the world’s most prestigious universities.
Years of dedication ultimately culminated in one of the world’s most rigorous academic accomplishments as Gwyn earned her Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Engineering and in Mathematics from MIT.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is one of the world’s most prestigious universities. Her achievement reflects not only personal excellence but also the limitless potential of Southville students on the global stage. It affirms that students nurtured in the Philippines can excel on the world’s most demanding academic stage.
Where the Journey Began
Long before she walked across MIT’s commencement stage, Gwyn first entered Southville as a curious three-year-old preschool student. From her earliest years, she embodied the qualities that Southville strives to cultivate in every learner: intellectual curiosity, resilience, humility, and a commitment to excellence.
Over the years, Southville became more than her school, it became the community that nurtured her potential, challenged her abilities, and encouraged her to pursue ambitions without limits.
“On behalf of the entire Southville family, we extend our warmest congratulations. What makes us proudest is your holistic spirit. Thank you for carrying Southville values so gracefully onto the global stage.”
— Dr. Marie Vic F. Suarez, Basic Education and IB Principal
A Record of Excellence
Gwyn’s success did not happen overnight.
Even as a high school student, she had already established herself as one of the country’s most accomplished young mathematicians. By Grade 10, she had represented both Southville and the Philippines in multiple international mathematics competitions, earning a Silver Medal at the China Girls Mathematical Olympiad (CGMO)—her fifth international competition.
During her undergraduate years, Gwyn continued to distinguish herself academically. She was inducted into Eta Kappa Nu (HKN), the prestigious international honor society recognizing exceptional achievement in electrical engineering, computer engineering, and computer science—an honor reserved for students who demonstrate outstanding scholarship and professional promise.

More Than Academic Excellence
While Gwyn’s accomplishments in science and mathematics are extraordinary, they tell only part of her story.
She is also a musician, a poet, reflecting Southville’s enduring commitment to developing students not only as exceptional scholars but also as creative, compassionate, and well-rounded individuals.
Her journey exemplifies the institution’s belief that excellence is never confined to a single discipline. True education develops both intellect and character.
Achieving the Extraordinary
Each year, only a small fraction of applicants are offered admission, with international applicants facing even greater levels of competition. Earning admission is an extraordinary achievement; completing an MIT education requires exceptional perseverance, intellectual discipline, and resilience.
Gwyn accomplished both.
Her success demonstrates that a Southville education can prepare students to compete and thrive at the very highest levels of global academics.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Gwyn Tangog’s success is a powerful reminder to every Southville student that extraordinary dreams are attainable through perseverance, intellectual curiosity, and unwavering commitment to excellence.
From a three-year-old preschooler in Southville to a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Gwyn’s journey embodies the transformative power of education and the limitless potential of Filipino talent.
As the first Southville Monarch to graduate from MIT, she has not only made history but also expanded what future generations of Southville students can imagine for themselves.
Her story will inspire Monarchs for years to come, proving that with vision, determination, and the right foundation, no dream is beyond reach.
