The team has seen an opportunity with agricultural waste, specifically Rice Husk Waste. Rice Husks are one of the most abundant agricultural wastes generated in the Philippines. As the Philippines is one of the world’s top rice producers, the rice husk is mostly indigestible to humans. The team believed that rice husks should not go to waste. Intensifying the rice husk use will have a great impact on the Philippine economy as well as in the communities where there was a lack of resources like clean water and electricity.
The team’s solution is converting waste into technology. A Solar Desalination in the Philippines by the use of Solar Panels made from utilizing Rice Husk Waste. As the Philippines is covered with bodies of water, desalination is the best method for producing drinking water – the process of removing salt from seawater which is very feasible as the country is covered with bodies of water that can be a source of potable water. The team’s solution targets seven Sustainable Development Goals which are SDG No. 1 – No Poverty, SDG No. 2 – Zero hunger, SDG No. 3 – Good Health and Well-Being, SDG No. 6 Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG No. 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy, SDG No. 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG No. 13 – Climate Action.
