Six high school students from Southville International School and Colleges (SISC) participated in the Science Summer Camp 2016 held at the National University of Singapore (NUS) last July. The program intended to inculcate a life­long fascination for science as the participants engage NUS professors in lecture series, perform and-s­on workshops at state­-of­the-­art laboratories and visit highly specialized research labs.

Sofia Margarita Malvar of Grade 10 ­ Commitment received a bronze medal in the Science Camp Quiz Bee. Also participating in the science camp were Hong Da Gyeong, Hong Dohee, Cassandra Hazel Hutchings, Giuliana Medina and Matthew Ezekiel Sybingco. They were supported by their science coach Miss Nerisse Aumentado.

The event attracted 150 students from the United Arab Emirates, Australia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Thailand, China, Myanmar, Malaysia and the Philippines who learned elements of Nanotechnology, DNA Analysis, Food Science Technology, Animal Classification, and many more interesting scientific disciplines.

The Southville delegates solved a murder mystery using DNA Analysis in the “DNA Workshop,” explored sub­atomic and molecular structures using an Electron Microscope in the “Nanotechnology Workshop,” indulge themselves in the chemistry behind food in the “Food Science Technology Workshop,” and witnessed scientific demonstrations help them discover their field of interest in science and technology.
